Nestled in the heart of Homewood, Alabama is an eight room brown-shingled
Nantucket cottage built in the 1920’s, originally a cherished family
home – now the haven for The Brown House, Elegant Cottage Living. Antiques,
Art, and Comforts of Life are the shop’s focus.
We proudly offer American and Continental furniture with an emphasis on American and British chests, small tables, and chairs as well as early rustic Southern primitive pieces. Items are hand-picked for their clean, elegant lines and solid craftsmanship.
Antique decorative arts range from an extensive collection of early English transfer ware of various colors and tones, English white ironstone, and other British ceramics such as pottery jugs and lustreware. Other select smalls include American, French, and British portrait miniatures, pewter, early decorative iron, glass, toleware, and Northeastern Indian and Southern primitive baskets.
Our
offerings of art cover a vast spectrum ranging from early British naïve
paintings to 21st century modern sculpture. Our paintings – primarily
oils on canvas or board – are generally American, British, Dutch or
French with an emphasis on portraits, landscapes and seascapes. Easily the
most energizing work in The Brown House is by premier Southern artist and
sculptor Larry Godwin, who transforms
steel, copper and bronze into commanding yet elegant forms.
Our “Comforts
of Life” were chosen to indulge the senses and make The Brown House
a home for all. Handcrafted items that enhance the richness of our lives
include Maine linens, Canadian buckwheat pillows, Vermont candles, Alabama
peanut brittle, Connecticut teas, Massachusetts soaps, Mississippi pottery
dinnerware, and Alabama art cards and stationery.
Conveniently located one block from Soho in downtown Homewood, shop hours are 10 am to 6 pm, Tuesday through Saturday with parking both in front and behind the shop.
